2016 UDI AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE
The UDI Awards for Excellence celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of developers who had the vision to take our cities, and the people who live and work in them into the future.
We honour the top achievers whose projects have made an exceptional impact on our communities and the urban landscape.
The jury will consider the following criteria:
- Built form
- Public, community, and amenity spaces
- Sense of place and liveability
- Project success - financially viable
2016 Awards Categories
Award for Excellence in...
1. Mixed Use
A building or building complex containing residential and/or hotel, plus one additional use
Predominantly industrial use. Can include strata
A building or building complex containing retail/commercial and/or office use
4. Ground Oriented Multi-family
Duplex, townhouses, or other multi-family building(s) typically of 2-3 storeys having individual grade level access; includes stacked
5. Urban Residential
Multi-family building (4-12 storeys) in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, North Shore and Victoria.
6. Suburban Residential
Multi-family building (4-12 storeys) everywhere else, including balance of Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley and the Okanagan.
7. Urban High-rise Residential
Multi- family building (13 storeys or more) in Vancouver, Richmond, Burnaby, North Shore, and Victoria.
8. Suburban High-rise Residential
Multi-family building (8 storeys or more) everywhere else, including balance of Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, and the Okanagan
Adaptive re-use, rehabilitation, renovation, expansion or heritage restoration of an existing building having recognized heritage value. Not restricted to designated heritage properties
10. Multi-family Market Rental.
This represents purpose-built market rental and may include ground floor commercial space
11. Multi-Phase Project
Phase 1 must be complete and the project must have 3 phases or more. Comprehensively designed community
Any project featuring extraordinary and innovative social, economic and environmental components that go above and beyond the sustainability requirements imposed by legislation
Any non-residential project that is designed for an organization, establishment, foundation, society or the like. Can include day care, museums, libraries, churches, conference centres, community centres, schools or educational buildings etc
14. Non-market Housing
Any multi-family residential project designed in partnership with the private and non-profit sectors, government health authorities and ministries and community groups that provides a residential assisted housing option for the social good. May include seniors housing, low income and/or assisted housing, co-op housing, SRO, student housing, and other alternative housing forms*
At the discretion of the jurors, categories 13 and 14 will be combined should insufficient submissions be received
15. Best of the Fraser Valley
Surrey to Chilliwack and Pitt Meadows to Mission, including Harrison
Any category above
16. Best of the Okanagan
Any category above
17. Best of Vancouver Island
Any category above
The following special categories are not open for submission. The winners will be chosen by either a jury panel or by the readers of the Vancouver Sun
18. The Maureen Enser Future Leader Award
An individual under 40 years of age who has best shown leadership, vision and made significant contributions in the last two years which have improved their company, the industry and the municipalities they work in
19. Readers’ Choice Award
The Vancouver Sun will select several projects from the Awards submissions and its readers will vote for their favourite
20. Best in Show
The jury will select the most outstanding project from all the category winners
